AFTERCARE

Introduction

Rehabilitation and social reintegration of children leaving institutional care is a big challenge today. Our project focuses on strengthening knowledge and awareness among such care leavers about different aftercare provisions. There is a lack of early preparedness to ease their transition from institutional care to the outer world and ensure their social reintegration. Many children lack mentoring, and caregivers often don't know how to guide them effectively.

The Challenge

Most children need transition planning, which is largely missing in the current context in Odisha. 'Aftercare' is one of the most unexplored areas regarding childcare institutions in the State. Adolescent children and care leavers are not provided with adequate information to make informed career choices. Our project emphasizes creating awareness among adolescents, care leavers, and stakeholders on different career options and opportunities for the children.

Linking with Service Providers

We linked care leavers with different service providers like educational institutions, livelihood training providers, and job placement agencies to facilitate their transition and social reintegration. Several district-level programs on aftercare were conducted, along with four exposure visits to service-providing agencies during the project period.

Organizing and Empowering Care Leavers

Another issue is the disintegration of care leavers, as information about them post-leaving institutional care is rarely available. We have initiated efforts to organize them and bring them to a common platform to share their thoughts and issues by forming a State-level association. Sanyog continues to add new care leavers and service-providing agencies to strengthen this association.

Life Skills Training and Career Counseling

To empower young adults, we provided life skills training and career counseling in line with the State Guidelines on aftercare. This ensures that children are better prepared to face the transition and lead empowered lives outside the institution.
